Forty tips to make your storage experience as pleasant as possible.

  Choosing Your Unit
1) Make a list of all items you plan to store.
2) Meet with our storage professionals and discuss the size, availability, price, deposit and rental agreement.
3) Choose the unit size that best meet your needs.
4) Ask about the security features of the facility (alarms, armed response, guards, security gates).
5) Confirm the access hours and that access is free of charge.
6) Inspect the unit that you will be renting.  It should be clean, well maintained and secure.
7) Book the unit at least two week prior to the date required.

  Packaging / Preparations
8) Gather boxes and packing supplies.  Remember that you might need large boxes for lamps and other decorations, plastic covers for covering furniture/mattresses and bubble wrap/fill paper for packing valuables.
9) Call U-Store-It and confirm your move-in date and time.
10) Call Budget Removers or make arrangements for transporting your items to U-Store-It.
11) Use only sturdy boxes and containers for storing your items.
12) Label all containers and boxes.
13) Fill containers to capacity and fill in space with packing material.
14) Pack heavier items in small boxes.
15) Wrap mirrors, paintings and pictures properly, mark them fragile and plan to store them on edge.  Never store flat.
16) Dissemble lamps, tables, barstools and other furniture as applicable.  Wrap pieces individually and store securely in boxes.
17) Wrap wooden table legs and chairs to avoid scratches.
18) Cover sofas with plastic covers or sheets so that they do not gather dust, and stack them on end.
19) Cover dressers with plastic covers or bubble wrap so you can stack boxes on top.
20) Fill drawers and appliances with small, light items to conserve space.
21) Wrap dishes and other breakables individually, layering padding at the top and bottom of the box.
22) Place mothballs inside all boxes containing clothes, linen or books.
23) Defrost fridges and freezers at least two days before storing.

  Storing
24) Place items in the order that you will need to access them - those that will be readily used should be placed in the front of the storage unit.
25) Before moving in pieces of large furniture, cover the ground with blankets or sheets.
26) Do not lean furniture against outside walls.
27) Place tabletops face down on the floor (remember to lay the blanket or sheet on the floor to avoid scratching).
28) Leave appliance doors open so that moisture does not build within.
29) WARNING! Do not store perishables or consumables.
30) Arrange the boxes so that the labels are facing out and easily read.
31) Stack boxes in a manageable manner.  Put large, heavy boxes on the bottom.
32) Leave a walkway so that you can access your items as needed.
